Re: Planning for 40

John, I'm sure it comes down to the level of risk individuals and organizations are prepared to accept. The other two Nebraska rides, NUMB and Tour Nebraska are still on. I am not privy to the information the organizers have, so I can only speculate. If host communities and support staff have a prob...

Re: Planning for 40

Well, I put the kiss of death on BRAN. I was going to post how I doubted that this years ride would happen, but got a little dose of optimism when RAGBRAI made their decision. And my recent travels in Nebraska, especially west and central, shows that besides the national chains, most of the business...

Re: Planning for 40

I too am more optimistic about BRAN and other rides, with the RABGRAI announcement. I figured that RAGBRAI had the least chance of all the rides, with the mass of people coming from far and wide. Still, I guess a lot of things can happen between now and June/July.

Re: Planning for 40

I saw the bobcat on the Wabash Trace trail, shortly after leaving Shenandoah IA in the early morning hours. I first thought it was a dog, running ahead of me about 30 yards. Before it went off the trail, it turned and looked at me. Not a dog! I've toned my dog reaction down a bit. Like you say, the ...

Re: Planning for 40

I didn't see a bear on the TABR, but I did see a bobcat in Iowa. Pretty common I guess. I think you are right about bear encounters. The odds are low. I'm sure the more you cycle in those areas, the more comfortable you are in doing so. Dogs are another subject. I carried pepper gel on the ride for ...

Re: Planning for 40

Very interesting and sounds like a great adventure John! Having lived in Alaska for a good stretch, what is your insight on dealing with Bears? I know basically nothing, other than I don't want to be located between a momma and her cubs. I know we were officially in bear country a few times on the T...

Re: Planning for 40

John, I had to look Deadhorse/Prudhoe Bay up. Holy cow, that is way up there! Sounds like some adventure! What combination of Bike and pack are you looking to take? How many miles and how much time to get back home do you think? I've never been to Alaska, but hope to one day.

Re: Planning for 40

A positive outlook is a good thing through all of this, so that's a good choice. I'd sure like to do a section of the TD. I can about guarantee I'll do it if most or all of the regular rides can't be done. Otherwise, I plan to do as many Randonneuring brevets as I can. BRAN and hopefully NUMB in Jun...

Re: Planning for 40

Thanks John. I'm going to register early this go around. Just seems like the right thing to do in this case. Got to keep the good rides going.

Re: Planning for 40

Good deal John. Can you or anyone else jog my memory on how the refund process went last year? I've been a late register for the last few years, as I never know what the weather will dictate for me and the farming operations. But thinking I should sign up early this year just in case and as a show o...

Re: BRAN 40 or 41?

Thanks for the info and recommendations John! Having started this whole cycling thing later in life, my experiences have been limited mostly to road biking. I've done gravel, mostly to the extent of what's between the farm and the nearest pavement, plus Gravel Worlds a few years back. But no real mo...

Re: BRAN 40 or 41?

John, the closest section to home would be what I would try. I've got the ACA map of the Rawlins WY to Salida CO section. Probably as good of location as any to get a taste. A few years back, I met a guy at Boreas Pass who was doing the TD and posting on CGOAB. I believe he started in Northern/Centr...

Re: BRAN 40 or 41?

John, I'm looking at doing a stretch of the TD next summer just to get a taste. I think the biggest lure of the ride to me is the beauty. Then it's the challenge. I would definitely be out of my comfort zone. For a short stretch, I could probably use the Diverge I rode on the TABR. Although tire wid...

Re: BRAN 40 or 41?

John, when I toured the Katy, I started at Clinton and rode to the end of the line. Then I headed back, but left the trail at Boonville. So I've never done a complete down and back. And touring, I believe even then it took me 5 1/2 days. To do it in 2 days would be awesome. I've done that mileage in...

Re: BRAN 40 or 41?

Journaling is a smart thing to do. The closest I've come to that, is in my cold weather riding. Looking to see what works in the various temperature ranges. It's helped greatly, as I take the emotion or how I'm presently feeling out of the equation when suiting up. Of course, I've journaled several ...
