Re: Planning for 40

Good to hear the Oklahoma Freewheel is still a go. I've never participated in that ride, but I've heard good thinks about it. I did consider BAK, but it's been cancelled as well. :( I was a bit concerned about Iowa's Ride when one of the overnight towns backed out, and then I get the email about it ...

Re: Planning for 40

With BRAN being postponed again, what are other BRAN riders planning to do for 2021? Since I can't depend on Canada opening it's border, and both RAGBRAI and Iowa's Ride are both a go for this July, I have registered for them, and hopefully I'll be able to see a few other BRAN riders on those rides.

Re: Planning for 40

I agree Bill. Only the organizers know the real reasons behind postponing the ride, and I certainly don't envy them for having to make that decision. The riders safety comment seemed a bit bogus to me as well. We as cyclist know the risk, and take a risk each time we go for a ride.

Re: Planning for 40

You obviously have a better handle on the situation in Nebraska than I do Bill. I was convinced it would happen this year. The Missouri ride, Big BAM is still on, and is scheduled for June 13-18 so I'll be looking into that. The cancellation of BRAN also concerns me a bit as to whether Canada will o...

Re: Planning for 40

I'm sure BRAN 40 will happen if at all possible. Being the first week of June verses the last week of July will make things a bit more questionable, but BRAN is also a much smaller ride than RAGBRAI.

Re: Planning for 40

A great question that many would like to know the answer to, but I'm sure BRAN-inc.org is probably in limbo as well. I am just going to plan for it, and hope it goes as planned. I will get my second shot next month and by early June many of the riders should be vaccinated. :D

Re: Planning for 40

I had no idea of the mileage I had accumulated until I added it up. I also noticed that my mileage seemed to increase after I retired. It's so nice to be able to pick the best times to ride rather than trying to make your rides fit around your work schedule. Supposedly there is an older gentlemen in...

Re: Planning for 40

thotle,I'm not aware of any early Spring group rides, you may have to arrange a solo ride on your own. 6200 miles is a very ambitious goal. Goals can be a good way to insure you stay focused on your fitness and cycling, if you don't allow them to consume you. In the year 2000 I set a goal to run 200...

Re: Planning for 40

Besides other cyclist the only wildlife I've seen on the Wabash was a coon and a fox. I haven't had a dog for many years but my kids all have them and are very attached to them. It seems to be in a dogs DNA to protect its territory and as you ride beyond it's perceived territory the chase usu...

Re: Planning for 40

You got to see a bobcat, that's cool and I really don't think it is all that common for people to see them. They are very shy and I've only seen them early in the morning just as it is getting light. I did see a wolverine once in Iowa once while cycling. :) and I keep hoping I'll see a mountain lion...

Re: Planning for 40

I believe that depends on each persons comfort zone. They say you are much more likely to be struck by lighting than attacked by a bear, but all the experts will tell you to carry bear spray. I never have and am not planning to. I've heard that some have even carried pepper spray on the Trans Am for...

Re: Planning for 40

The 500 miles north of Fairbanks will be almost all new country for me, the Dalton Highway which is mostly gravel is only 415 miles, but will require me to run fenders and wider tires and carry some cold weather gear since snow above the Arctic Circle is possible during any time of the year. I will ...

Re: Planning for 40

I have traveled quite a bit in Canada and have always enjoyed my time there, but I'm not considering the Trans Canada Race for next Summer. Since this is it's first year I think it would be good to hold off and see how it goes and if it can even happen. There is a ride that I've wanted to do for a l...

Re: Planning for 40

I'm going to keep positive Bill and believe this year BRAN 40 will happen as planned. What other cycling adventures do you have planed for next Summer? Still thinking about doing a section of the Continental Divide Route? Are you giving any thought to the Trans Canada Race?

Re: Planning for 40

As I recall when BRAN was cancelled last Spring you were given the choice of a refund or rolling your fee over to the next year. Since I rolled my registration over to 2021 all that was required was for me to resubmit a new waver for 2021, and I believe that the new waver can be submitted anytime be...
