A Little Bit About . . . BRAN Scholarships
BRAN, as an entity, is set up as a charitable Nebraska non-profit corporation. It’s intended to provide a fun, safe way for participants to experience the great state of Nebraska. BRAN uses its revenues to provide scholarships to Nebraska high school graduates to Nebraska Trade Schools, Colleges and Universities through the Omaha Northwest Rotary Club. It is a way to give back to the state for what the state has given to us over the years. We want to stop the “brain drain” from Nebraska while at the same time supporting safe cycling.
Currently BRAN awards $25,750 annually in scholarships to 26 Nebraska trade schools, colleges or universities. There are 17 standing scholarships:
- Central Community College
- Chadron State College
- College of St Mary
- Creighton University
- Doane College
- Metropolitan Community College
- Midlands College
- Mid-Plains Community College
- Nebraska Indian Community College
- Nebraska Wesleyan University
- Northeast Community College
- Southeast Community College
- University of Nebraska – Kearney
- University of Nebraska – Omaha
- UNMC – College of Pharmacy
- Wayne State College
- Western Nebraska Community College
In addition, each overnight host community and the start/finish town receive a $500 scholarship. The town selected as best host community by the riders receives an additional $500.00. It is our way of saying thanks for having us. The host communities select the scholarship recipients. However, those selected must attend a Nebraska college or university. A special scholarship for a student at Central High School in Omaha is also awarded.
BRAN started awarding scholarships in 1985. Students across the state have received in excess of $500,000 in BRAN scholarships.
