A Glimpse into History

Broken Bow’s story began in 1877, when pioneer homesteader Wilson Hewitt settled in the area. Naming the town proved to be a challenge until his sons discovered a broken Native American bow at an abandoned campsite. The fitting name was approved, and in 1882, Jesse Gandy officially plotted the town, generously donating lots for homes and businesses. He also designated a public square, which remains the vibrant heart of the community today. By 1884, the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad arrived, marking the town’s incorporation and growth into the thriving community it is today.
